25 Years of Digital Trust: Celebrating the Legacy of the ESIGN Act
On June 30, 2000, a stroke of a pen in Washington, D.C. changed how we sign, store, and share information forever. President Bill Clinton signed into law the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce (ESIGN) Act, an unassuming but revolutionary piece of legislation that laid the foundation for the digital economy we know today.
This year, the Electronic Signature and Records Association (ESRA) proudly celebrates the 25th anniversary of that landmark moment, reflecting on how the ESIGN Act empowered a nation to embrace secure, efficient, and paperless transactions. From signing leases and authorizing medical records to buying cars online, the ESIGN Act helped Americans leave the printer, pen, and paper behind and step confidently into a digitally connected world.
“The ESIGN Act became the legal bedrock that still supports so much of our digital economy—whether you’re signing a lease on your laptop, authorizing a medical release from your smartphone, or buying a vehicle from across the country,” said Jon Davidson, Chief of Staff to President Clinton. “Twenty-five years later, it remains one of the quiet engines that keeps the American economy running.”
Since its passage, the ESIGN Act has not only transformed how individuals and businesses operate it has also helped establish trust in technologies that continue to evolve. Its influence extends into artificial intelligence, blockchain, biometric authentication, and other innovations shaping our digital future.
In a special letter honoring this milestone, President Clinton reflected on the act’s legacy:
“By removing legal barriers while preserving consumer protections, the ESIGN Act took a responsible and balanced approach to what, at the time, was an unfamiliar and revolutionary way to grow the American economy—conducting business online rather than on paper… I want to thank everyone at the Electronic Signature and Records Association for acknowledging National ESIGN Day, and for your enduring commitment to widening the circle of economic opportunity through technology and innovation.”
At ESRA, we are honored to carry that legacy forward. Our work continues to promote digital trust, shape policy, and support innovation, ensuring that the next generation of digital tools is as secure, accessible, and transformative as the ESIGN Act intended.
As we celebrate 25 years of progress, we recommit to fostering a future where individuals, businesses, and governments can confidently navigate the digital world, with trust, integrity, and opportunity at every click.
Happy 25th Anniversary, ESIGN Act. Here’s to the next chapter in digital evolution.
