Blockchain comes to medical marijuana EHR management

Alternate Health Corp., makers of the CanaCard software that manages dispensation of medical marijuana, will introduce blockchain technology to its patient management system, the company announced this week.

Rebranded as CanaCard, it will be deployed across Canada. Blockchain will help secure its cloud-based ledger, assuring that HIPAA-compliant electronic records management maintains patient privacy. Alternate Health said blockchain provides the security while still allowing authorized and licensed personnel to provide safe access to medical cannabis, manage patient care and suggest enhanced treatment recommendations.

“The blockchain ledger represents the final missing ingredient to full open accountability,” the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The previous iteration of Alternate Health Corp.’s technology was a card-based system. Dr. Michael Murphy, the chief executive of Alternate Health, said implementing blockchain “creates the accounting necessary for both state and federal governments to embrace our technology.”
